There was a old story in Japan: In 1784, Chunosuke Matsuyama and around forty seaman went to an island for looking for the treasures. However, their ship struck to a coral reef so that they had to stay on an island. There was no food and water on the island. Chunosuke Matsuyama and seaman all died on that island. The reason why this story survived was the drift bottle. Matsuyama wrote his experience on a thin pieces of wood, shoved it into a bottle and tossed it out to sea. After150 years this bottle was discovered in the village where Matsuyama was born. Saburo Sakata, who is a Japanese designer, put this story into his design the “Blank”. Saburo Sakata was born in 1985, he lives and works in Kyoto. He worked at Creative Unit Graf in Osaka from 2007 until 2011. The design object “Blank” has the appearance of the drift bottle. In this tiny empty bottle, you can store many, many messages – up to 2 GB of messages. It’s, quite literally, a digital reincarnation of the romantic message-in-a-bottle (Johnny, 2012). It is made up with the cork and transparent bottle. The difference compare to the traditional drift bottle is that the content in the bottle is not the paper, it is an usb. The designer uses abstract similarity to present the concept of information storage. In today’s society, digital information becomes a trend. Most of people abandon using paper to record the information, they prefer a more convenient and quick way. The ‘blank” has the advanced technology to satisfy the needs of people in modern society. However, the appearance of it uses drift bottle which is old and mysterious. The designer accurately catch elements of the past and present, and put them into his design. Furthermore, the abstract similarity can also be found in the “Blank”. The usb is inserted into the computer, in the same way, the tie plug is inserted into the drift bottle, too.
Saburo Sakata wins the prize of kokuyo award design 2008. The design object is “Wood Stick”. The feature of this object is that the ort of the pencils produces the visual effect like the rings of debris. Through this design, it is easy to find that Saburo Sakata is a romantic designer. He prefers to keep the original function of the object, an then give the object an art effect. Romanticism, attitude or intellectual orientation that characterized many works of literature, painting, music, architecture, criticism, and historiography in Western civilization over a period from the late 18th to the mid-19th century (website). Comparing with the “Wood Stick”, the “Blank” not only has romantic appearance, also has romantic story as the inspiration. The romantic emphasizes intuition, imagination, and feelings.
Comparing with the “Blank”, the “Candull” is the opposite design. The appearance of this design object is the modern light which can be put in the living room. Modern furniture is streamlined with polished, smooth and sleek surfaces. Pieces are simple, uncluttered, built for economy of form, and to serve a purpose (iMatchDesigners, 2011). However, the bulb inside the light is a candle which was used before 19 century. By contrary, the “Blank” has the old appearance but the high technology thing inside. It is interesting that modern and ancient seem too different concept, but they can be combined and have a fancy effect.
